Some years ago a cargo vessel in the Pacific became helpless because her steering gear had broken down during a storm. She radioed for help, and the captain of another vessel changed course and for three days and nights stood by the helpless vessel, unable to do anything till the storm abated and the repair was carried out.
How frustrating to see a friend in need but be unable to help. We all know the feeling, don’t we, when a friend is ill or worried of has suffered a bereavement and there’s nothing we can do except stand-by. Nothing? Well, just to know that someone is standing-by can be such a comfort in times of stress.
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. 2Corinthians 1v3:4
